This piece was custom order that a client ordered for his son who was just a few years old. I forgot to measure it before I delivered it but it was just under 4 feet long. The top is made out of maple. The legs were made out of Douglas fir. I drew and colored the animals and checker board with color markers. And I colored the border using a stain. I then finished it with a gloss deft spray. This was my first furniture table.

This is beautiful. And you just opened my mind to all sorts of ideas. How did you keep the markers from bleeding out?

Very well done, Kenneth. I especially like the technique of having the animals reaching over the border. I also think children will appreciate that all the animals look friendly. Great color composition and layering technique. Excellent.

Thanks again for all of your comments.
ProutyBoy ,
The table top is maple, and maple has a very tight grain which is ideal. I sanded the wood until very smooth and it reacted similar to paper. I used Prismacolor markers which dry pretty quick. So as long you use a wood that sands very well and have some good quality markers you shouldn’t have too much of an issue with bleeding.
Thanks,
Kenneth

QUESTION: did the finish on top of the color-marker alter any of the drawings? smeared it? or anything of that sort? what kind of color marker did you use?
I was thinking of doing something of similar effect, but was wary that the finish might ruin the drawings because of the solvents in it.

nice looking table. I like how the checkerboard appears to float over the animals. I also like how the animals break out of their boundaries.
great job.

Purplev,
I apologize for getting back to you so late. I used Prismacolor markers but I’m sure any good quality markers would do. I used gloss Deft spray to finish this piece. I don’t suggest applying your finish with a brush especially if you are using a product that has solvents in it which will cause smearing and blurring of the markers. And if you apply a spray finish apply light coats to begin with and make sure your item is level so that the finish doesn’t run and ruin your artwork. I look forward too seeing your completed piece let me know when you are done.
Thank You,
