I have a carving buddy that I like to get together with for coffee. He always asks what am I carving and since I plan on dropping by this week I thought I better carve something so I did this little Shelf Elf.
I’ve also posted another photo of a Shelf Elf that I carved a while ago. This guy is much larger with a long, flowiing beard.

Pretty cool. And, I got a bit of chuckle from the little fella. Nice work.

This is a very interesting piece. I just wish I could carve but this was not one of my gifts in life.
Thanks for the post and the story behind it.

Thanks all! And as for luck, of course, I still have all my fingers, right? LOL!

I like the idea. Is this the first of its kind? Any reason the eyes are not noticeable? Thanks fpr posting!

I like it. I admire people who can see something, and remove all the rest of the wood from around it.

Thanks again! And no, Shelf Elves are not an original idea of mine. The idea was originally done by woodcarver Alan Goodman. The instructions were in a woodcarving magazine fom a few years ago. As for the eyes, this is part of the allure, not only for the look of the piece, but since carving eyes can be tricky for the inexperienced (like me!) a project like this can be a quickly done. The style of the elf doesn’t allow much space for eyes either. You can, of course, carve a more realistic face or woodspirit and use the ‘over-the-edge’ beard for a great effect.
btw – I’ve also posted another photo of a Shelf Elf that I carved a while ago. This guy is much larger with a longer, flowing beard.
