This is “Tweed”, posing with a shovel. He was carved from a Jon Nelson basswood roughout. The shovel was made from a little strip of basswood. The finish is boiled linseed oil, followed by acrylic wash. It was my first serious carving project (vs. whittling). Our instructor was a fine gentleman named Tom Ryan, a virtuoso carver from New Braunfels, Texas. In a 12-week course, we learned carving-in-the-round and painting. Tom spent a lot of time showing us carving techniques, and even more time encouraging us. The venue for this was San Antonio’s excellent “Academy of Learning in Retirement”.
