Poverty is the mother of invention. Turkey season is here in Vt., so I made a box call. Mostly, to see if i could make a turkey call, as opposed to another kind of noise maker, which, would be turkey repellent. Is can proudly say, that the contraption you see before you, is most certainly a turkey call. I call it Tom Foolery. The body is leftover black walnut, from guitar making. As is the birdseye maple. The one in the hardware store, that I had to pretend to want to buy, while secretly taking mental measurements, was cherry and poplar. I assume the density is more important, than the actual species. gobble

Good looking turkey call. I bet it looks better than the one in the store.

Nice turkey call, hope it works better than intended.

Best looking paddle I’ve ever seen on a box call. Great job and good hunting. Absolutely love wild turkey—both the hunt and the dining.

Thank you gentlemen. I don’t know what it is about waking up at four a.m. to climb a mountain and sit invisibly under a tree, while pretending to be a lady bird, but I go gaga for it

I can say, with complete confidence, that I have successfully called ol’ Tom, with my little creation. I don’t know what is more satisfying Hunter71, hearing the first notes of a freshly made guitar, or watching a long beard strut around to the sounds of my first box call. I’m going to attempt a duck call, as soon as I get my lathe back.
