This Table is one in a set of 4 entitled “The Elements”. They are aptly entitled, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water.

In this piece I opted to let the firery brilliance of the Paduak speak for it self .. So I went totally Asian in this one.

The Top and Base stretchers are solid Paduak and all of the black is Ebonized White Ash …

You have created a wonderful piece, I really liked the autumn piece, but this table for me is perfect. The weight in the legs compliments your thoughts perfectly. I’m excited to see the remainder…...another thing I really like the logo/signature that is used as your avatar for LJ….If you were able to carve that as your signature It really would be so dramatic…..congratulations man

AT….GGGGourgous Man Do I love that Table with the Flaming Paduak utterly BEAUTIFUL. Got to ask this though. l had built a couple of things with Paduak…. but I had this one fellow tell me that it will brown over the years. have you had any problems with that. I love the way you’ve ebonized the white ash. How long ago did you build this one if I may ask…...your brother in woodworking John

I have really enjoyed your series. This piece is spectacular and is my favorite with “wind” a very close second. I am inspired by, and in awe of all my fellow lumberjocks who are not only craftsmen but artists as well. I hope to someday reach as far as you have and work like this inspires me to do so.

Thanks guys, There is actually some truth to that,, if Padauk is exposed to direct sunlight, it will darken over time. what I usually do is, I apply the finish iright after the final sanding, when it is its most bright. That locks in the color, and I always inform the client that it will darken, but that they can slow down the process buy keeping it out of direct sunlight.

I actually worked on all 4 of the elements at the same time, it took about 6 weeks to complete the set.

A marvelous piece of work. The fifth element is Ether(empty space) . So for a few days don’t do anything!

I was waiting for this one. I knew it would be spectacular but this went way beyond spectacular.
I still think wind is my favourite. (It’s spelled right, I’m Canadian)

A.T.

I was wondering when this one would be posted. I would have to say it is my favorite. I love the look that the paduak gives to the table. The ebonized ash sets up a nice contrast to the color of the paduak.

Thanks for the post.

Very nice AT… you’re spoiling me… I see your stuff and it turns me into a dreamer.

I like the angle of the legs with the rails between them, it looks like they were angled after the rails were in and it “stretched” the wood in the middle of the rails. Of course, I don’t even know what to say about the top…. WOW! Thanks so much for inspiring me.

Lovely, just lovely. Gorgeous hunk of paduak. Have you had any luck with UV inhibiting topcoats with regards to species such as Padauk? Just curious.

Gorgeous work.

Another winner, AT. I’m curious about one thing, though. Did you take any measures to compensate for seasonal humidity changes? Seems like that wide, solid top will expand and contract and try to drive those miters apart. Or is it going to live in a stable climate?

Wow! I love the super contrasting paduak (Nice, fiery hunk of it too!) and the ebonized ash, and the Asian theme fits perfectly!
I love the whole series, they are truly the best series I have ever seen.

Thanks Again every one,,,
Sharad, I love the fifth element concept, I never thought of that, thanks …

JC, I have not tried any of the UV Top coats, one thing I’ve found over the years is that some of the exotic woods do not react very well to some finishes, I do intend to try a UV finish on Padauk to see the results. Some finish companies will tell you on the label if its good on certain woods or not. I use a lot of Sam Maloof finishes and he tell you on the lable.. A quick note, I tried Tung oil on padauk once, it llooved like very seasoned mahogany within 24 hours … not good …..

Muzhik – I usually make it a pratice to first check the moister on the lumber I buy, and more importantly, if I am doing a table wider than 12”, I only use very flat, straight grain boards, in the case of the Padauk, the grain was flat and very wavy, so I left a little space on all 4 sides, and mounted the top in the frame with biscuts only to allow the top to float and breath. By the time Paduak gets here from Africa its pretty dry and stable …
