In my opinion, Hickory can be some of the prettiest wood. This particular piece of hickory was left over from when I made our headboard (another posted project). This piece has some of the most amazing grain I have seen yet from hickory. I’ve made boxes for gifts and made boxes for the fairs and shows, but never one for me. I’ve got to be honest, I like this box so much I think I’m going to keep for myself.

p.s. These pictures do not adequately recreate the absolute beauty of this wood. This box is almost gold in actual color with the cream.

Man, you did a beautiful job on this. I’d keep it too! Love the way you did the inside. Perfection. Very, very nice box.

Gorgeous! I particularly like the picture of the exterior corner. Love the way the grain flows.

And if I didn’t make something for MYSELF once in a while, I don’t think I would be fully utilizing my skills and abilities. You HAVE to make things for yourself!

Thanks gang. If my Grandma was still around she would say “Must be good, sure weighs a lot.”. This box weighs a ton. I like it.

The picture doesn’t show it well, but the small part of the tray has a ring bar. And the box is lined with felt.

Rook,

I agree hickory can be a beautiful wood and you certainly have done it justice. I really like your tray arrangement. It looks well thought out.

I have had good luck with thinner sides and corner splines. Have you considered using a large router bit to round the corners? It really brings out the grain pattern.

Well Jocks I must provide an update on the hickory box. Decided to give it to my youngest daughter-in-law for Christmas. I was humbled by her expressions of gratitude, but I need to confess that I was quite pleased with myself.

Happy Sawdust to All,
And to All,
A Smooth Finish.
