I made an army of the Pencil Holders from The Wood Whisperer for gifts last Christmas. I used curly maple for the sides and ipe for the base. The finish is BLO followed by a couple coats of shellac. There was a wormhole in a section of the board that creates a really cool lightning bolt effect in a couple of the pencil holders…one of those nice surprises when the rough cut board first comes out of the planer. These gifts were a big hit in my office!
