Sweet sixteen box for my assistant’s daughter. First box attempt. General plan was from a Doug Stowe book, then modified. Lots of imperfections. A few scratches on the walnut crotch that I didn’t realize until about 3rd coat of finish. Mortises for hinges were a little off, and a small gap on the front left side of the lid draws my attention everytime I look at it. A good learning experience with miters, dividers, miter keys.

Finish is 2 coats of BLO, 2 coats Maloof’s blend, and a few coats of minwax poly spray in a can.

Wood species. Walnut, Tiger maple, and soft maple for the dividers. Plywood bottom. Thanks for looking. I will now start posting a few of my other project to the site. I am an addict to look at other people’s projects, but need to start contributing to the site.

Nice box. I struggle with hinge mortises , too. You took on quite a challenge with that many dividers.

Very nice. I really like the cork on the underside of the top….nice addition.

Great job.

I think you’re being too hard on yourself. That is a nice box. I hate installing store bought hinges so I’ve gone to all shop built wooden hinges and don’t plan to ever go back. There are some great hinge ideas on this site.

Nice box looks great. There are no perfect boxes. Hinges drive me crazy.

Great job on the box. I like the splined miters.
