My wife said one of her other ladies was quitting where she worked and wanted a going away present for her. I said when and she said tomorrow. After losing the following discussion I set out to see what I could throw together.

Luckily the lady is someone I have made live edge furniture for so I had an idea of what she likes. This was the overnight project. I didn’t get the contrast I was hoping for.

Top & bottom are spalted Ash.sides & back are Elm. Drawer is Red Cedar (it’s always better with Cedar) with a Hawthorn face. I would also like to point out I AM NOT a skilled box maker (yet, but trying to improve). All joints are just butt joints.

Thanks for looking

Hey, you did good considering the timeframe involved. Sometimes it is just wiser to humor the client.
And here your wife was the client!

The wood, overshadows the joinery!

I agree…..it is definitely eye-catching. The live edge really makes it stand out and I love the cedar drawer. You did a great job.

I don’t know how I missed this when you posted it, Monte, but I do know that you, your client, the recipient, and the rest of us are much better off since you lost the discussion—especially you, because you know that if Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. Great job of “throwing something together”.
Have a good’un
