I made 6 of these bowl for ‘07 Christmas presents. Cherry with walnut accent stripes. I saw plan for routed bowls in one of the popular magazines and my wife kind of liked the looks of the round ones but said that they had to be deeper. I said ok, but i didn’t like the way the plans were as there was to much waste by glueing up solid material and then routing it out so i dicided to segment them and then route. Alot more work than I expected but it was well worth it.

I don’t really care much for bowls, but I do love segmented turnings, and this one it great.

Routed bowl ? I’d love to see how to do that. Do you remember which issue of pop woodworking this was in ? or maybe that would make a good blog entry if you cared to share your technique with us..

I like the segmented bowl idea. lots of long grain. The keys make nice accents. I agree on this being a great subject for a blog. You are up to making some more and documenting the procedure right? Is it just me, or does it seem most projects end up more work than anticipated…

I have seen articles on this technique. A blog would be great. I thought at first that this was a turning. Nice job. Routing a bowl appears to be much more difficult than turning one. You did a really good job on this one.
Thanks for the post.

It came out nice. I would like to hear a little more on the process, too. I guess I missed the PopWoodworking article.

Thanks for the nice comments.
The original plans for the routed bowl is in “Woodsmith Vol 29/No.170” . You can go online to www.woodsmith.com and look for “online extra video workshop” for some more info.
jm82435, the long grain was another reason I went to the segmented style. the original plans had what i felt was to much end grain. Also, the walnut splines are just for decoration that I decided to add as i got started making the segments.
