”Hefty Barn Wood Slab Bench”
—-or you pick and choose to use for a perfect flavored example of coffee table solid rock!
Just finished this one a week ago and yes, this is the first completed project of ’RusticWoodArt’ as wrote in wood for the coming new year.
The top of this piece is some two hundred year old plus give or take….you tell me, and was recovered from the third floor of an old barn I took down. If one likes stories of old wood then just imagine the stories this slab of floor board can tell if one has the time to listen as the wood speaks. Place this piece of wood in your den and listen as the wood warms your heart with the telling of seasons gone past and the sounds of sheep and horses all put in for a long winters night and then you can awaken to the sound of spring coming forth. Maybe one might hear the sound of children all set full of laughter as they go about doing their chores and then comes their telling and the smell of romance in the air as they learn and tell of that first kiss, taken in a secret barn place, in their teenage years. Ah the stories that wood can tell us, if we could only take the time to sit a spell and listen….
As I was saying; this old pine slab top, which I planed semi-smooth with a broadax and timber chisel, while deciding to highlight the areas of splits of character is a find to treasure and pass on to future generations. The end boards, rails and bottom boards are all ten year old pine which has greyed up nicely in color, before I set to working on them also with #80, #120 and #220 grit sandpaper. I completed the finish in tung oil and ten coats of shellac. I have not decided yet if I while go on to protect the wood with a varnish are not; as I am leaning to thinking that I will find out what the customer wants to use this one for….bench or table? I long ago learned that it’s best to leave an area for the customer to express their desires in the creation of ’wood art’.
Table size is: (17’’ wide x 50’’ long and 22’’ high)
—-this piece is for sale and has a lifetime of character to reveal and inhance your life with, while making also for an interesting conversation piece.
....and if you listen real good….here’s another story….

All inquiries are welcome and will be treated with privacy and respect.
“It is with this thought in mind that I create rustic furniture and wood art that enhances the atmosphere of any milieu, while at the same time ”releasing the spirit of the wood to fulfill its own unique character.”
Thank you.

parting with a treasure—not sure if I could do it!!!
beautiful piece of art.
When you do part with this I think that this write-up would be a nice keepsake for the owner, something to show guests and grandchildren.

A great piece of work Frank. The person who buys it will have to be plenty strong, with all that heft. I also think it’s going to last a lot longer than that old barn did.

That is a nice bench Frank. Wow, 10 coats of shellac, hand applied I bet! Let’s hope the customer wants to leave it just like that.

Hello everyone;
—-yes, I really like shellac and the color of golden richness that it gives to old wood.
Another fine point that I always pass on to the customer, is that by going with shellac, any damage to the finish can be repaired very easily and shellac is user friendly for doing touch ups. But then if one wants good solid protction, then the varnish looks great on top of the shellac and as I said, much depends on the needs and desires of the collector.
Yes the shellac finish is hand applied, as all my tables, benches and sculptures are finished by hand brushing or hand rubbing. I will spray sometimes when I am playing around and testing finishes or colors for a new type of color finish as when I do a test piece.
Course one could always just decide to turn this one into a work bench also….
GODSPEED,
Frank

I don’t know if I could sit on the bench with those teeth looking at me.
Very good use of our heritage wood supplies.

I was thinking, but don’t let that fool you, I try not to make a habit out of it. Anyhow, that is a very cool bench Frank, and an inspiration to a novice such as myself. Then I thought that perhaps I could print a picture of it out and hang it in my shop to inspire me to strive for excellence. But then I realized that my printer cartridge has been out of colored ink for aobut 6 months, and grayscale wouldn’t do it justice. So I came up with another plan. Instead of buying the $60.00 worth of ink to fix the printer, i just send the money to you to cover shipping to me. Then I can build a big shelf in my shop and your bench will sit in a place of honor amongst the assorted wood scraps and general disaray that I’ve created. Now, that would be inspirational. Just to have that bench in my shop would likley make be a better woodworker, just by the vibes it would be sending off. Sort of a deal where I would get better by osmosis. Some of your “powers” would come with the bench and seep out into my shop. Kind of like Superman and kryptonite, but just the opposite. See, Frank, I would benifit, and you would be happy and honored knowing that you were helping a fellow human being. What do you think? I’ll start building the big shelf right now! But really, nice bench Frank.

Oh, no, I was not trying to start a bidding war. I don’t think that a price can be placed on the bench, just didn’t want frank to have to pay for the shipping. Frank, I almost have my shop ready for the bench :)

Hello to everyone;
—-and as I was reading here I saw some wondering about ‘shipping cost’ and….
Well no problem about shipping cost as I also will deliver to your place. This works out real good since I have found that friends of ‘wood art’ and that special piece of ‘wood art’ can then be introduced properly. Usually the wooden piece of art feels more comfortable with this arrangement since the separation can often be hard on both of us, due to the years we have sat together and gotten to know each other.
And then the collectors themselves feel better since they know also the importance of a proper introduction of the art into their living space and I show all involved, how each can thereafter connect with each other. All this process makes for a lasting and continuing relationship between the ‘spirit of the wood’ and the ‘spirit of those beings’ who have now supplied a new home, while also making for a continuation of stories that will come forth into far reaching generations.
Lasting treasures of ‘wood art’,that will inhance the lives of all those who are willing to come and listen….and then there is also the beauty that speaks forth….
Thanks to all, for your comments….!
GODSPEED,
Frank
