Are these inlays actually embedded in the wood, or applied to the surface?

Thanks.This inlays (I mean metal and mother of pearl) actually embedded in the wood.A metal ribbon is 1 mm above surface. The stone enamel filled the room between adjacent ribbons.So we can say the enamel only applied to the surface.
