This is another gate I copied from my wonderful experiences walking the Costal Path in Wales. This is a Huntsman’s gate and makes it easier for hunters to cross fields without wrestling with the larger gates. Not very intresting to our UK based LJ’s, but in LA this is something different. I built it of Red Oak and worked the wood while still a little green. I read this was customary of how oak was worked in earlier times because the hand tools were not good enough to handle dry English Oak. After a few months of Alabama summer sun it was ready to paint. The spacing of the horizontal bars and the layout of the bracing are important to achieving an authentic look. The only trouble I have had with it is based on how I use it. Apparently sheep don’t climb but dogs can and for that reason I have had to Alabamaize it by adding some chicken wire to the inside to keep the %#$%@#^ dogs in the yard.

Hi Roz,

This is an interesting gate and thanks for the story behind it. I got a smile out of the comment about your dogs. They are resourceful.

Thanks for the post.

Thanks Fellows, I promise as soon as I get a little more of the home improvement stuff I’ll try to post something cool and artistic like most everyone else does so well.

very nice gate and fence. I, too, can realte to the dogs! We have a poddle who thinks he is a rotweiler but can climb through or over most gates. He is a handful!

Great gate nonetheless, even wiith chicken wire!

God Bless,
Hawg
