I’ve made several of these rocking horses as Christmas gifts for my granddaughter, nieces and nephews. The design is my own and the wood is hard maple. The mane and tail are made of heavy yarn and easily replaced if needed. To create the mane, I first drilled a series of holes into the head approximately 3/4” deep to thread the yarn through. I then sliced that section from the head and routed a groove onto the back as a channel for the yarn. I threaded the strands of yarn through one hole and out an adjacent hole, with both ends of those strands hanging freely. I followed this procedure on each pair of holes from the front to back until the head was completely covered. Once completed, I used screws to attach the mane back onto the head.
(I added a couple extra pictures here from my prototype, not the same horse… to show some detail of the head.)

Rick,
This is a gorgeous rocking horse. You did a really nice job on it. I am sure the kids enjoyed receiving them. This is something that, as they outgrow them, can be put away and brought out again for their children.
Thanks for the post.

Rick, looks great. My uncel just made one. He has made several over the years. I want to make one or two for a set of twins my son just had. Never seems to be enough time. Anyway yours looks like it could be done in a couple of days. Any plane or drawing showing the size ect.
Thanks keep up the great work.

Rick, I like this horse. When it comes to creating the mane I am trying to follow how you did it but unable to picture. Any chance you take some pics of a horse while in the process to describe how it is done? I would truly appreciate it.

That is a good looking horse. The construction looks sturdy enough to handle the use it will get.

Rick,
You’re the man! Thanks for posting the pics that is much easier than the way I have done it.
