Fellow Woodworkers,
Last year, my niece Aimee and her husband Eric were blessed with a baby boy, Cameron. I made Cameron a crib of white oak that he sleeps in now.
Learning that precedent setting can be dangerous, three OTHER nieces became pregnant shortly after Cameron was born. So, I have three more to build.
This crib for Lyla Sue is the same as Cameron’s crib, only in Cherry. Note the plan allows for a toddler bed option. The full bed add-ons I can make another time, since baby three has arrived and I am behind on crib production. The wood is sealed with shellac, coated twice with polyurethane and buffed with satin wax.
I think I’ll try a different plan for the next two, but I’ll be sure to keep all posted.
Happy Woodworking!

Very Nice Job. I was asked by a lady from Church if I could make cribs, high chairs, and Changing tables. I love your idea, and while i was looking at it, I got an idea to make the front a 2-piece that the top folds down.

This is a nice piece, Cubby. I really like the slats. Are they cut from one piece, or perhaps laminated for additional strength. My reason for asking is this is the kind of slat I would like to use in a baby cradle I’m making.

Very nice. Looks like a lot of repetitive work with all those slats.

Very nice, those slats look real nice. Did you use a special jig to round the ends?

Elegant. I don’t know that I have ever seen a crib with a curved back rail and rounded end flat slats like this. Makes for a very pleasing design. Good work, I can see why the other babies will need one, so you’ll have to keep working. Sam Maloof writes in his autobiography that whenever he gets an order for a crib, all other projects come to a stop to wait until the crib is finished. He says, “babies don’t wait.”
