Solid Pine Armoir Solid Pine Armoir Solid Pine Armoir Click the pictures to enlarge them

I made this about 20 years ago. It’s one of very few pieces that I still own and is full of memories. My two girls used to sleep in it when they were toddlers. Ten years later my wifes youngest son slept in it.

it was originally finished in a golden oak/puritan pine colour but over the years it took quite a beating so I recently refinished it for two reasons…........I was sick of looking at that knotty pine and it needed a ‘lift”.

the armoir was a curse to re-finish causing major bouts of cursing, swearing, cursing and more swearing and was often tempted to just burn it. the fish eye was every where but not to be beaten and taking some advice recieved right here…........fish eye is gone and it once again looks good in my living room.

the unit is made from 4 sub assemblies.

the top hand made 6” cove mold is fastened to a dovetailed box which forms the “lid” which also has a hidden compartment up there. The middle section with two doors. The drawer section and the legs/base.

I should have made the gable panels line up with the door panels but we do, we live, we learn. The interior is now my office with printer/fax/laptop/scanner…......and all the junk that goes with an office.

The unit stands just shy of 8 feet, is almost 5’ wide and is 24” deep on the inside. What you cant see is the back which has four raised panels, finished like the rest of it so that in the eevent I want a room divider, I can turn this 90 degrees and the back looks as nice as the front.

the interior is natural and the outside was originally lacquer but I painted it with water based acrylic outdoor black paint and then top coated it with water based acrylic urathane after buffing out/rubbing out the edges to leave slight hints of the original finish.

What a beast.

Impressive piece!

What refinishing process did you use?

Hi Charlie and thank you

I scuffed the whole unit with 320, washed it down with mineral spirits and quickly wiped it dry with clean rags…....repeat, repeat, curse and repeat.

I sprayed it with a cup gun…..........black…........check for fish eye, sand and repeat where needed

rubbed out the edges and applied several coats of the urathane with a cup gun.

Cheers

Hi Roman,

I am assuming that you refinished it in the shop and then assembled it on site. I would hate to try and move it as a fully assembled unit. It must weigh a ton. It is a nice piece. I don’t blame you for keeping it.

Thanks for the post.

Hi Scott

Yes, I re-finished it in the shop and then moved it back into the house. No real assembly to be done as the drawers drop onto and into the legs, same for doors and top.

Thank you for the kind words

Very nice. It looks like it has stood up to the test of time.
