This is my first post to this site and thought I would share these coasters I made.
The mosaic is made from Curly Maple and Padauk. The sides and base are Cherry. First time working with Cherry, what a fun wood with which to work. The finish is a couple coats of 100% Tung oil followed by multiple coats of Formby’s Tung Oil Finish. Hopefully enough to protect the coasters during actual use.
I start by making a 3/4” thick mosaic block from the individual triangles, cut on my Christmas present: a bandsaw (thank you sweet wife). The block is then cut into ~1mm thick slices (again, wonderful tool, this bandsaw) and these are glued to cherry bases. Then a little router work to form the sides.
The inspiration for these came playing with a bunch of Maple and Padauk triangular scraps from a previous project. Or, why a box of cutting scraps is a good thing.
If you like, I have a photo blog detailing the build.

Really good looking coasters. Gotta love the scrap bin.
Good taste in beer too!
probably shouldn’t admit this on this website, but the only coaster I’ve made so far was from a scrap piece of walnut about 4” sq and 1/2 thick. No finish, just slapped on 4 felt stickums on the bottom and it sits on my computer desk. <g>

Very nice, especially like the last picture of the coasters in use.
