I made small gift boxes for my two nieces. This one is walnut with cherry keys. The lid is ambrosia maple. The design is from Fine Woodworking. Except for slight dimension changes, I didn’t change the design.
I’ve done several experiments with bookmatching and this one is the first that really matched well. The third picture shows it. This piece of walnut had a quartersawn pattern, which I think made all the difference.
Note that I’m posting the two boxes separately. I didn’t have any pictures of both together.

Preemptive description of finish follows. :)
I wasn’t going to put any finish on the inside, but then I started to think that I would get some ugly overage from doing the top edge. So, I put a coat of a natural Watco Danish Oil inside and out and on the lid. After an hour I wiped it off best I could and that was it for the Danish Oil. I then wiped on a coat of Tried and True Oil Varnish on the outside and the lid. Following the instructions, I wiped it off an hour later. A day later I applied another coat. After that, I did the same thing every day for another four days, except I also rubbed it with steel wool before each coat.

This is a beautiful box. I like the way you matched the grain on the walnut and what is not to like about the ambrosia maple. It has such nice character and grain pattern.
Thanks for the post.

Love the wrap around grain, and splines with crisp edges.

Very nice. I like the keys, and the grain match is excellent.

Looks like a Doug Stowe box, these are always great boxes. You did a nice job with the book matching. Be careful, these are addictive!

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone!
Blake, yes that is a Doug Stowe design. It’s featured in a Fine Woodworking article.
