I made small gift boxes for my two nieces. This one is cherry with walnut keys. The lid is Goncalo Alves. The design is from Fine Woodworking. Except for slight dimension changes, I didn’t change the design.
I tried to bookmatch the cherry, but the grain was such that it didn’t match too well. I do really like the lid, though. The wild part in the corner was the edge of a knot, which had some voids. I kept shaving off a little at a time on the tablesaw until the voids were gone, so I could keep as much of it as I could.
Note that I’m posting the two boxes separately. I didn’t have any pictures of both together.

Very nice. The lid looks great !
I made the exact same box from redwood and pine scraps, just to practice making small boxes.
What is the finish ?

I knew I should have said something about the fihish! I was being lazy. :)
I wasn’t going to put any finish on the inside, but then I started to think that I would get some ugly overage from doing the top edge. So, I put a coat of a natural Watco Danish Oil inside and out and on the lid. After an hour I wiped it off best I could and that was it for the Danish Oil. I then wiped on a coat of Tried and True Oil Varnish on the outside and the lid. Following the instructions, I wiped it off an hour later. A day later I applied another coat. After that, I did the same thing every day for another four days, except I also rubbed it with steel wool before each coat.

Another fine looking little box. I really like the wood used for the lid. Great finish on it also.

This is a beautiful box. I love the grain on the lid. Thanks for posting your finishing routine as well. I like to see this when a project is posted.
Thanks for the project. I don’t blame you for posting them separately. They are two projects and that way you can post enough pictures to showcase them as they should be.

If I made that, it would be hard to let it go. That is a fantastic lid. POP! (I have a MAC and can zoom in on my 24” screen and see every nuance in the grain, it’s awesome.)

You have made a beautiful fox with very attractive looking lid. This is encouraging me to try making box.
Your walnut box is equally attractive.

They are both great. I think I like the lid on this one a little better than the other, however.

This is really nice… That piece you chose for the lid has a lot of character.
