Solid Oak Mantle

I made this for a customer whose house I have been working on since last November. His brief was to fit a solid oak mantle with a slightly rustic look. When he saw it his comment was it couldn’t have been more perfect! If only all customers were that easy to please!

It was a 4’ rough sawn batten, 8”x3” section. I planed it down roughly with a power planer, then sanded it with a belt sander to a (not exactly cabinet finish) 80 grit! It was then varnished with a satin varnish to match the rest of the oak in the house.

I like it seems to fit right in with the small wood stove. Good Job

Just the job. There’s nothing like a big slab of wood above a fire. Thanks for sharing it.

Sometimes we get so enthralled with intricate designs that we forget that simple can be beautiful also. Nicely done.

This is great! I also like that you still took the time to knock down the edges throughout without just rounding them over.
