Claro Walnut Band Saw Box

March, 2012—Another box made from a solid block from Woodcraft. I have worked with walnut before but this was a first with “Claro Walnut.” I’d say it is a little harder than ordinary walnut. Fun little project. I think the knobs were some left-over hickory. Tung oil finish.

By the way, I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before. I have found that the knobs hold better when they are doweled into place. I drill a 3/16-inch hole in the knob and in the drawer fronts, and glue a dowel in there. Oh, and I have discovered that one of our local Chinese restaurants gives chop-sticks in 3/16-inch diameter. Perfect for this application.

Nice open look to the drawers. Did the tung oil darken the box that much or is it just the pictures?

To Hawaii Lad: This wood was dark to begin with. The Tung Oil enhanced the grain, but I would not say it made the wood darker.
