These are Oak and I did some re-engineering of the origional design I saw years ago. I call it a “hinie-pincher” stool. If the seat isn’t fully closed and the 2 top board tight together when you sit down it will really pincher your “hinney” bad. I assembled them with 3/4” dowels in blind holes. Tricky to assemble as it has to work smoothly to be open and closed and function smoothly.

Good looking job! They look heavy duty.

David,
Those are nice stools. Your construction of these looks solid. By modifying the design a little these could be transformed into folding tv trays as well.
Thanks for the post.

I saw this at a Civil War re-enactment just last weekend. Now after seeing yours I have to try this. Did you know that both army’s used this design for stools and tables? Easy to move and set up I guess. Great looking stools. Thanks for shairing.

Great looking stools. I bet you won’t have to sit on it more than once when it’s not opened properly. Next time you will remember :-)).
Terry – Did the South win the Civil War re-enactment you went to? I keep hoping that if we have enough re-enactments that we will eventually win one of them :-))

They may be handy to fold up but I wouldn’t want to pack them along with everything a soldier would have to carry on his back!!! LOL
