This Crucifix was handcarved in May of 1969. That’s 40 years ago. I was asked to do one for a co-worker. When I went to do it and found that I had none to look at for reference, I decided that I would keep it myself….. being ashamed that I didn’t have one in the house. It has hung over our bed ever since. The cross itself is made from basswood, while the Corpus is carved from white pine. For strength the arms doweled and glued separately with the grain going with the length of the arm and fingers. This was all done before the carving began,.... even the size of the dowel had to be pondered. If I would have carved into the dowel it would have stuck out like a sore thumb. I can’t remember just how long it took me, but I think maybe around 50 hours. The whole project was stained with an early American stain. I’m not sure about the finish. Looks like a semi gloss…(that;s what I was doing everything with at that time). The cross measures 15” long x 8 1/2”. Corpus is about 8 1/2” long x 8 1/4” arm span. It was a fun project
THANKS FOR COMING TO MY GALLERY!
