This is my first attempt at making this style of box.
Its made from beech which I salvaged from an old woodworking plane that friend was throwing out after tidying his garage. I think the wood was between 80 and 100 hundred years old and had been used by a craftsman instructor in a training school – far too good to let go to the scrap heap.

David,

I really like your work, the attention to detail and beautiful mix of woods is very nice.

I particularly like this box. Did you hog out the interior with a router? What are the dimensions, approximately?

This box with a contrasting lid would look great, I’m thinking this goes on the list for xmas this year. (can never start too early getting ideas).

thanks for posting.

David,

This is a nice pencil box. The sliding lid is a nice detail that is more complex than it looks.

Thanks for sharing.

Nicely seen inside that old plane David.

Thanks for commenting.
Dimensions are about 7” x 2 1/2” x 2”
I cut the base off the box with my bandsaw, then made a template to guide the router for the centre cut out. I removed the bulk with the scrollsaw then used the bearing guided router to work to the line. What you can’t see is a metal spring inside the lide which stops it sliding about.
I agree about the different coloured top – I’m making some at the moment and will post them when finished.

Nice looking little box. Those sliding dovetails are great.
