About 20 years ago my dad bought three slabs of ash with the intent to make them into benches. This past Christmas, I overheard my mom talk about her benches that still haven’t been made, so I decided to help dad out: he has been too busy playing golf and running around the country enjoying retired life. What I have now is an early Mother’s Day present for Mom.
I wanted to keep the rough look so I only sanded it to 120 grit with a belt sander: the sawmill marks are still visible. Turning the legs to fit in the bench was just another excuse to use the lathe. The wedges are nothing more than a piece of maple firewood that was saved from the fireplace. The finish is just a water proof protectant that will allow the wood to keep the natural look: not really what I wanted to do with it, but what mom wants, mom gets…

Dude, great job. I am sure you mom will really enjoy them.
I just went to a friends house yesterday to split a 6’ log in half to make my wife a couple of benches for the yard. There is one thing about the ones we will have. No one will steal them without making a lot of noise or getting a hernia.
Keep up the great work!

Brian, These are nice benches. If this is what your mother ordered then I am sure she is one happy camper.
