Interesting design and craftsmanship. You may not be able to slide it under the bar. I really like your shop.

And a little bit of insight into Kaleo’s workshop, too…
I watch David Marks make prototypes. He always says you should make one before jumping in with the expensive wood to figure out joinery and angles and such. I don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone who actually DOES make prototypes. Or at least I haven’t seen their prototypes and they don’t ever talk about them, like they’re some dark secret, locked up in the attic…
High props to you, Kaleo, for putting that prototype out there as a great example for the rest of us!

very cool shape, looks like it defies physics a bit – curious to how different is would be just using different woods.

coooool seat. My unsolicited advice is not to skimp on your gussets that support the down legs connecting to the floor boards (not make them too small).
That joint will get a lot of abuse. It is a good spot for a through tenon/peg, not something a biscuit, dowels, or screws could hold over the years. I wouldn’t even trust it with a loose tenon, only a meaty real tenon coming down, and a heafty mortise that has lots of wood on the end-grain end to keep it from breaking out. If it breaks, it is a long fall with a drink in your hand.
You also may want a foot rest about 18-20” below your seat bottom to take the pressure off the back of your thighs while sitting.
I am encouraged with your work, keep it up, I will enjoy seeing your stool progress from concept to completion.
When do your graduate from your program there?
Glad you took time to share what you are working on, I appreciate that.
Mark
P.S. Ethan: I think seating is a good place for a prototype, and I have done so in the past. But, you are right, I’m one those that hasn’t shown off my prototypes. They are made from 2×4’s with screwed together joints, something that stands up to test the fit and comfort, but not much else.

I just noticed your tag line and website name, I like it. That will be a collectible signature some day, believe it. This is a great step to making a business for yourself. Have you started on business cards and brochure ideas yet?

Mark-
I haven’t made any cards yet. This is mainly due to the fact that I am not to sure where I am going to end up at the end of the year. I will finish the program here in december. Then after that it’s either home to Virginia or maybe somewhere else. We are thinking to Seattle. But there is always the possiblity that we might stay here in Australia a little bit longer. I am working on designs for my website and cards and all of that though. Thanks for the comments. I am looking to put a foot rest on it. Also this prototype was to test the strength of the finger joints at the bottom and on the arms. The back rest rail and the rail at the bottom were going to be finger jointed together also. I think that will give it incredible strength.
For the others thanks for the comments. I post things here to get an idea of what others think. I really appreciate all your opinions.
As for my shop, it’s not mine, but it is a great space in an old building. I’ll post some pics of the shop and the tools. I’ll be lucky if I ever get to work in such a well equipted again.

Kaleo, this is a very interesting study. It reminds me of this chair (click on both links) that an acquaintance of mine experimented with recently. It’s an adaptation of the Rietveld-style dining chair.
Great to see original work, though, Kaleo. I’m looking forward to seeing this develop.
