Little box for JJ

Project by Bradford posted 616 days ago 369 views 0 times favorited 8 comments Add to Favorites Watch

My friend saw some of my work and asked for “something little”. So I made him a little box for his game room. I tried to simplify it as much as possible. Keeping the rabbited lid and simple box joints as the only means of design points. The joints came out a little loose. But since I didn’t want to start over, I sanded the joints about 45 minutes after glue up and routed the sides to heat up the glue and fill the joints with sawdust. In a hope that it would fill the gaps, plus I used a lot of glue,(cleanup was a major pain in the butt) I couldn’t clean it up while clamped. All in all, it came out ok. It’s for a game room that will see a lot of use and possibly bumps and drops. The lid fits air tight and all the wood was from cut offs of other projects. It’s a little rough looking but a functional box.

Hi Bradford,

This box has nice simple lines that give it a nice detail. The box joints should make this a sturdy box as well.

Thanks for sharing.

Nice little box. Box joints can be tricky to get them perfect, but once you do they are a thing of beauty and very strong. Nice job.

Very cool. I like the rounded box joints.

Sweet box. The finish looks very good. I like the rounded joints, too.

Brad…

How do you do your finger joints?
Table saw or router?

Yeah, rounded over finger joints are handsome.
Simple is good.
So is ‘more glue’.

I bought a jig at a big ww show, called “Rout-r-jig” by woodline tools. it has served me well, the round over corners on most of my boxes help melt the glue and the sawdust into a “filled” joint. I have read others comment on the same jig that didn’t have good results. A jig from a book that you build would suffice for cheaper, but I was just starting out in woodworking when I bought it.
