This was a project I saw in an old issue of WOOD magazine, and I liked it so much that I made myself one. Next thing I know some of my friends, co-workers and even my mother wanted one for themselves. I took a trip to Woodcraft for some 1/8” exotics and started working. These were a lot of fun to make, and once you’ve made one the rest just go that much quicker. I made several more than are pictured, but if I remember correctly I used Walnut, Purpleheart, Bubinga, Cherry, Mahogany and Rosewood as well as several others. It’s a nice little piece to carry around to show off your skill when an entertainment center won’t fit in your pocket.

These are great, I remember that article also, and I made myself and then about 15 others one also. The work great and look great. I actually have seen these at galleries being sold. They usally are getting about 30-50 dollars apiece. I’ve often thought of making a short production run ad make 50-100 at a time and see if they would sell. I think they would.

The Woodworking Index shows one in 9/04 and one before that, but I know it’s the latter (9/04) because I just saw it scanning through my magazines the other day. I don’t have the earlier one.

Those are great looking card cases JP. Like Kaleo said, I think you should produce a small run and see if they will sell.
Let me know if you find that article. I would like to make some as well.

TaterSalad is correct. The article is in the September 2004 issue (no. 157) of WOOD Magazine. There is a downloadable acrobat plan available on the Wood Magazine website for $3.
