Yesterday while waiting for my truck’s oil change I went to a used article store and found this lazy susan in the household section. Inspired by Jim's ferns I thought the find would be good to practice my woodburning on so I picked it up.
It was a beautiful piece of wood and of course my first instinct was to sweep my hand across the surface. I was surprised that it was still rough. I guess someone had started it and for whatever reason they didn’t get to the sanding stage.
When I got it home, my first task was to sand it smooth and I was surprised by the results—this wasn’t pine I was manipulating. I know how sandpaper works on that now. Excellent, I said to myself – this is quality wood. (Rick later said, “Didn’t you notice how heavy it was?” Sure, it was heavy but I thought it was because of the size.
Sanding complete, I warmed up the woodburner tool, selected a couple pictures from “Buildings” by Gene Franks and traced the outlines onto the wood. (No freehand for this girl. I’m no fool.) I put two pictures together to create the scene and I used the lines of the wood as a guide for the foreground, horizon, hill in the background.
This morning I buffed it up with some finishing wax .
Wood: maple, perhaps? made of 7 pieces of wood, 15.5 inches wide (39.37 cm according to my converter widget).
LazySusan: plastic wheel
Cost: $1.99 Canadian

Hi Debbie;
—-ha!, better watch that ‘hand sweeping’ as this habit can lead to hand splinters….
Great find, better yet; greatly finished ending to a wood project of art!
I also like the ‘cupola’ on top….
GODSPEED,
Frank

What a bargain!!
Beautiful job, you better keep it, so you can remember how much you’ve improved with your future works. Don’t forget to put your signature, & date on everything you do. It’s almost impossible to remember when you did it, especially 30 years down the road.
PS: Also when you’re famous, they’ll be worth more. LOL

Debbie-
Hard to think of you as a beginner when you do this level of work. Combining references and using the grain as you have is the work of a much more experienced person. Congratulations!

gee thanks for the kind words.
I can honestly say that everything to do with wood is new to me – even the use of the drill for building just started last year with our benches.

This morning I tried my hand at chiseling out a groove that I needed (remember: no router working yet). The first one was very frustrating but the last one I did wasn’t too bad. The router would have been easier I think.

Nice to see this one come back around. Great work Debbie! The picture is an excellent addition to the piece. I would not have thought it was two pictures either, until reading your description.

Yes, this is cool, great job Debbie. I like that idea of the notches on the edge for spinning, I’ve never seen that before on a lazy suzan. Thanks for bringing this up again, Bill.
