the story is acually better than the mantle . this guy called and said he just had a brazillian cherry floor put down and wanted a braz. cherry mantle built . i went to his house i look at the flooring and said i guess i miss understood you i thought you wanted brazillian cherry . he said i do i want to match this floor . i said ok but the floor isnt braz. cherry its american cherry . he said no i just bought it last week its braz. cherry . im thinking ok so your the expert . he went into another room and returned with a piece of the flooring , showed it to me and flipped it over . it was stamped MADE IN BRAZIL ! lol theres no end to how you can get ripped off !
i felt bad for the guy so i gave up my piece of curly cherry crown for his mantle .

This is a very nice mantle. And I really appreciate the story behind it. These often can be as interesting as the project itself.
Thanks for the post.

It’s a sad day when people start counterfieting wood Trim. Lets hope it doesen’t spread too far. I will swap you some genuine Aussie gidgee or jarrah for some of that curly cherry.

Probably expensive Trim, that wood is particularly heavy and customs might have a problem unless they are treated. Might be worth a thought all the same.

Hi Verne;
Great Mantle. I wouldn’t have donated a piece of curly cherry crown for him. (unless it said made in Brazil on the back. LOL
I have many client’s teaching me. Just last week a clients 82 year old father taught me how to build custom kitchen cabinets. He was a barber so he’s been educated by his customers on many topics.
I’m now considering becoming a barber to expand on my woodworking abilities.
At least ten times during the course of this project, friends and neighbors had comments which I would have to explain away the following day.
I can’t wait until I get good enough at this work so I don’t have to explain things like “are you sure they’re the right hinges for this cabinet?”
One night one of their neighbors had a few questions about my work, so they called me and put him on the phone so he could question me directly! I hung up on him.
Or, shouldn’t the sink drain line be 2” instead of 1 1/2”. Are you sure?
Why are you using European hinges. What’s wrong with American hinges?
Finally on Friday they had a counter top guy come in to make templates. He said WOW, where did you get these cabinets? These guys are really good. Now they feel like we did a good job.
They’re killing me. I’m thinking of getting a job a Home Depot. This way I have only to see customers for a couple minutes, and they go away.
I have to thank the Lord for being blessed with a large amount of patience.
Lee

Lee, that’s just sad. I am glad you have the temperament to handle it. Mrtrim, you also have a benevolent heart and you do good work.

I bought a bunch of “walnut” to match a customer’s flooring for a bistro table commission. Come to find out, it was Brazilian walnut (aka Ipe). Completely different! Bought more Ipe to make the table and kept the walnut for picture frames. Ipe is very hard and dense, and makes annoying yellow sawdust, but it’s great for patio furniture. Almost indestructable.

...and I was trying to tell this contractor that his floor was really pine they just made it look like oak and the box called it Asian mahogany. Made in China….go figure. Lowes supplied the flooring. Wonder why the real flooring guys didn’t get the job.
Have your say...
