Here is the kitcchen table I finished in Sept. 2007 after 2 years of work. The top is hand planed and hand thicknessed from 5/4 cherry down to about 3/4”. That is a sweat producing activty. The breadboard ends are pegged in five locations and the top is attached to the base with small cherry buttons. It is finished with numerous coats of poly that have been hand rubbed, finishing with rottenstone.
I also built most of the chairs. The blue one on the left, my son built when he was 16, with minimal help from the old man. The black one in the back right is my 14 year old daughter’s handiwork. She did get a little more help, but some of that help was in the form of mistakes. The rest of the chairs are mine.
I did cheat and order the base from an outside source. It came in parts and is assembled with mortise and tenons that I pegged. The base is finished with milk paint and a wipe poly.

Awesome table Kenn! Hand-planing the top to 3/4” is truely a labor of love, and it shows.

This is a really nice table. I love the look of cherry. I am glad to see that you involved your children in the project as well. It sure beats sitting around the television or in front of a Wii.
Thanks for the post and the story as well. I have often said that I feel the story is often as important as the project itself.

Beautiful table. Looks like you need some sunglasses to keep the glare from the finish from blinding you. I really like the look. Outstanding that you have your kids involved in woodworking.
