One of the girls I work with asked me to make a pen for her that she could give to her husband for his birthday this weekend. The wood is jatoba and maple. The kit is a black titanium jr gent ii rollerball (from Craft Supplies USA). I used a CA/BLO finish. There are 200+ pieces used in this pen.
I’m pretty happy with how this pen came out. There are a few details I’d like to improve though…
Comments and critiques are welcome
Thanks for looking.

Very nice, the finish turned out great. How did you do the CA/BLO finish? I tried it by only sanding to 400 grit, applying BLO then CA and repeating 3 times. It turned out okay but not nearly as brilliant as yours.

Thanks for the compliments, it’s a lot of fun making these pens.
As to the finish I use, I started out using Russ Fairfield’s technique (it can be found here). I’ve modified my process a little from what Russ explains.
Someday I may break down and buy micro-mesh, but I’m currently content with the finish and want to focus on improving the segmenting.
Hope that helps explain what I do (and makes sense!).

Darryl,
Again this is a beautiiful pen. It looks like to me like you tend to favor the bc and maple combination. I can’t say as I blame you on that either. The two woods work well together.
I am not sure what you need to improve on with this pen as it looks gorgeous to me.
Thanks for the post.

Thanks guys. I started a new assembly the other day. This new one should include over 400 pieces if it works out.
Have your say...
