I made this box about three weeks ago but did not hing it being broke is no fun been out of work to long need some shows to start soon. Anyways I used my last hing today and finished it because it is one of my favorite boxes beside the Bear box. I love it when I find pictures inside the natural wood. I had to cut the center out of a piece of Maple to get this fish but it is well worth it in my book. The Fish looks as if its jumping out of the water. This wood was courtesy of Robert Triplett after I seen the fish I called him and asked him if he wanted the wood back he laughed at me and said he never seen it and to just keep it and make something with it. Of course everytime I see a abstract in wood he never sees it until I point it out and then sometime he still can’t see it. But it is ok because I do see it as well as others. Robert is the reason I started making boxes in the first place and is a good friend. Ok enough of dogging Robert but he always seems to get me back. The box is 8”x5”x41/4”. Made with Maple thanks to Robert and Verdicillo with dowels holding the sides. and finished with Watco a product Robert also turned me onto. The box is still wet from finish.
Thanks Dennis
Smile Robert its ok you can’t see lol.

I CAN see the trout! Nice use of the wood.. Every box is better. I will have to quit showing you my “secrets” that I learned here. Try some wooden hinges. How hard can they be?

I can see the trout, no doubt about it.

I like the corners, did you run dowels in alternating directions?

I found a cheap place for hinges, http://www.woodworkingparts.com/ I ordered today, never used them before. Great prices, way better than running up the street to the local Hardware. Much as I like those guys- they charge too much for some things.

Now that’s just to cool, what a find, I love what we can find in nature. Very nice use of that piece, looks great.

There is something fishy about that box. Very nice and I also saw the trout right away. I hope you do well at the shows..

Good eye. I saw the fish right off as well. Nice job on the box but wooden hinges would make it better. I’ll be posting still another way to do wooden hinges as soon as the finish dries on my latest.

Dennis, I just ordered some 1”x1” butt hinges from the place Danpaddles recommended. I will share. It’s what i have learned to do in 2nd grade!! I needed screws for some other hinges i just got so i am giving them a try. I started gluing up 19 boxes tonight. some will be hinged.

Really nice box. I like the way the trout appears to be swimming through the water!

-- It always looks better when it's finished!
