Small box a la Andy

First, I didn’t intentionally rip you off, Andy.

I’ve seen sculpted boxes and furniture, and they always intrigued me. I made the base of this box from curly maple, the top from bloodwood and wenge. The open grain of the wenge was filled with multiple coats of shellac. The final finish is Deft spray semi-gloss lacquer rubbed out with 0000 steel wool and paste wax.

I intended to build it with wooden hinges, but I got ahead of myself and forgot until it was too late. Hence the drop-in top with African blackwood knob. The size is 9×6 x 3 7/8.

Thanks for looking.

I like the “floating Lid” – How on earth did you take that photo (or is there a new type hinge out there that I don’t know about), he, he

Thanks for all your kind comments. I could tell you the box was made from a magic tree and the top floats when it has the mind to, but. . . it’s just an optical illusion. The top is resting on far corner of the base. Kinda cool, huh?

Where do you get exotic woods in the Tallahassee area? I’m a noob and can’t find anything nice in town.

Tallahassee is a wasteland. :-) I get most of my wood on eBay, as well as from other online sellers. Woodcraft has stores in Jacksonville and Orlando. If you’re in the Orlando area, go to Amazon Exotic Hardwoods in Casselberry. It’s only about two miles from Woodcraft.

Good luck.

Thanks. I’m in Tallahassee, but travel some throughout FL. I’ll likely travel more for good wood. Thanks.
