Tricky… Bonus or bust… bonus points for getting and making a Valentines present for Xaria. Now the bust is getting her the chocolate spending the money when really we can not afford it at the moment and using her arts and craft stuff with out asking…
Technically the bonus should out weigh the bust, but… well okay okay she loved the pressy… even said thanks..
I was given some scrap wood the other day, and amoungst it all were some long thin strips of pine. I was initially going to throw them out. Any way I came up stairs and watched a online wood working video. Steve at Woodworking for mere Mortals He was talking about bent lamination, and he made a heart shaped candy box, and went on about valentines day… Any way 20 minutes later my brain went click… holy crap valentines day… ummmm… I put 2 and 2 together and borrow Steve’s idea to an extent… but slightly different.
I scrounged around, and had a little bit of ply left over for the base and maybe the lid, however the laminations were not as deep as Steve’s either and I thought well we will maybe just make a tray… But, like Steve I had never done this before either, so it was also a good learning curve for me as well.
I used every single small clamp I had as well and really I could have done with a few more… Like Steve I did this in 2 halfs and then joined them together… Traced the base and cut it out on the scroll saw.
Now by this stage I was pretty sure I was not going to do a lid, and since no lid I had no area to dress it up bit ie; paint or add a scroll saw pattern to it etc, so in my wisdom while Xaria was at work I scrounged through her desk draws looking for arts and crafty stuff that she uses. I found some paper and a few bows, and some gold card for the base.
Now I probably spent more time dressing the damn thing than I did to make it, but the end result, Xaria thinks it looks like a bought one, though she knows I made it.
All in all the bent lamination thing was fun and well suprisingly pretty easy to do even for an novice like me.
Oh she got the pressy earily so I didn’t have to hide it…
