My oldest boy was growing out of his jr. race car bed, (actually his little brother was ready to move into it), and I had him hooked on reruns of the best show ever – The Dukes of Hazzard. So, it was only natural that I make him a General Lee bed. Somewhat simple construction of 3/4” plywood, and assorted 2 by lumber. The hood opens to reveal a small toy box. The dual exhaust is rounded off 2×2 that serves as the rails holding the matress support. All in all, construction was pretty easy, it being a labor of love. I simply scaled the dimensions from a die cast model and applied them to the plywood, and although the roofline got a bit chopped (to make it easier to get in & out), all in all I was pretty pleased with the results. More importantly, so was he… Worst part of the whole project (aside from building in an unheated garage in the middle of Chicago winter) was the paint process. Sanding, sanding, sanding, primer, primer, baselayer, details etc.

Thanks all. Now if I can get him to go to sleep…
I mad another bed for my middle boy, and will post it when I get a chance. Cool thing is, when they get old enough where I can trust them not to kill themselves, I’ll be making a bunk bed out of them. The General Lee will be jumping over a dinosaur, which is a bit far fetched, but then again, the General can jump over anything, right?
