Project Information
I saw an idea for a squirrel feeder where they used a gallon glass jar to hold the nuts. I thought it would be kind of neat to make a little house with the Jar attached in a hole on the side wall. The squirrel would have to enter the house by the door, and then go into the jar to feast. Found out that birds would enter the same way. I had made many of these for myself, neighbors, folks that I worked with, and donated some for door prizes and fund raising events. Generally I would not put a finish on them and let the new owner decide what type of finish they wanted to use. After a few months of enjoying watching the squirrels frolic, the wife said, we got to get rid of those ^%$^$ squirrels, they are making a mess eveywhere and eating my plants on the deck. The trick is,,, to not make any for yourself, but give them out to the neighbors. Let them attract the blankety-blank squirrels.
I found that when moving these houses around, If you were not careful, the jar could fall off and break. I found that if you make the little house just big enough, and you made the roof removeable, you could fit the jar on the inside when transporting it. Worked out quite nicely. To hang i would simply attached four little eye bolts to each corner of the bottom piece and hang from a branch.
