Just finished this today 2/2/1012 I designed and made this for Laura for Valintines Day I know she does not go to this sight unless I show her something here so I hope she does not deside to look here before Valintines day. The box is 7’ x 4 1/2” x3 1/2”. I hope she likes it. The handles for the front are rounded a little but hard to see this in the picture. I cut the box out with a scroll saw. Walnut, Maple and Purple Heart.

can’t go far wrong with those colors! Looks good, I think I have never seen one with the two little hearts on the sides.

I did a few of those a while back, may do some again one day, if I ever get another small fine blade. But I’ve been thinking about that whole construction-

You start by gluing up a bunch of boards, then cut the outside, then do what amounts to a resaw to remove the back board. Is that the right way to start? well, would you be able to avoid removing the back (and drawer fronts for that matter) if you didn’t glue them up ahead. Just pin thin boards to the front and back somehow, maybe with some little ears that you could cut off at the end.

Or maybe, make the glue up with the kind of glue the scroll saw guys use, for the top and bottom layers.

Or am I missing something here? The resaw cut will never be as smooth as the surface that comes out of my planer. I can only come out ahead on time spent sanding.

The other thing that keeps occurring to me is to use something from the firewood pile, to save the glue up part. I have seen guys do this with log segments, wish I had a bigger selection of “firewood” to pick from. Do they let the log sit a few years before cutting?

just some random thoughts….. hope I didn’t detract from your box. I probably should have posted this in the Design forum.

You did a good job on this Dennis! I couldn’t picture what it looked like from talking to you. I’m sure Laura will love it. Nice combination of woods. The Walnut almost makes the purpleheart pink. Sneak it out to your shop when I come to visit.
