My boys (ages 6 and 9) and I have been making wooden swords. We have made a number of different designs and imporved our technique over several months. I cut sword “blanks” with a slight taper and then the boys design a guard for cutting on the bandsaw and they carve the handle and blade on the belt sander. Both of them have gotten pretty good at making a smooth handle and a sharp (but not too sharp) point and the older one can now do most of the work on his own!
The swords are mostly Hickory. The guards are Walnut, Rosewood or Purpleheart.
We had a booth at the Maker Faire where we sold some of our first swords. The boys made some real money – which has predictably increased their interest in making more.
We just made two more to donate to our school auction. My 9 year old made a video about the process of making them as part of a class project. It is online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiVPiJQfgrc&context=C3850a31ADOEgsToPDskL4gkZjhPlDPgANk3RG4awe

I made a sword with my 13 year old last year… but, and this is where you’ve done yourself and everyone else a huge favor… you documented it; man I wish I’d done the same… Always next time.
Thanks for sharing; great job!
