I did a revamp to our basement entrance this last year. There used to be these old wagon wheels that served as a guard rail. There were very old and worn looking so I removed them and installed some treated lumber base-plate and aluminum rails. It came out looking pretty good. Added some solar lights to top off the uprights.
Not bad for a hack!

Wow, it looks amazing! The stain you chose goes quite well with the black railings.
