It seems like every time you check out new projects, there is a band saw box. Here’s mine. It was made from a solid chunk of hickory (from the same tree that smashed my garage causing me to renovate, get a workshop and finally get some real tools…). the handle is cut from the inside of the box.

Finish is mineral oil and wax.

That is a great job, especially for the first time. That’s a real nice clean cut on the face, showing that you have the knack for BS boxes.

Good first effort band saw box. Sounds like the tree crashing was a blessing in disguise .

Oh, you silly trees. Making men get real tools. Twas a gift from God.

And your bandsaw box looks great. Nice job!

that looks great. how do you cut the inside out so nicely? i’m trying to make an engagement ring box and i’m floating different ideas around for boxes to make.

Yes, I love that hickory tree more than ever…

btoon84 – full disclosure – I learned about bandsaw boxes on YouTube. Great videos (although a lot that show some really lacking shop safety…) for getting ideas. I cut the basic box and then was going to use a Forstner bit on the drill press and make a nice round inside opening. Then I watched another video… cut the back and the front off the drawer piece, then cut out the inside of your drawer piece. Then glue all the drawer chunks back together – I used that inside of the drawer to make my pull. Obviously you loose your kerf thickness to your drawer from those two cuts You can make simple puzzle boxes this way, although I have not been happy with my prototypes yet – too much wiggle room from the kerf, maybe poor technique.
