I made this lamp to replace the one we had on our side table in our dining room. It is made out of 3/4” solid oak and 3/4” solid purple heart. The shape is of an octagon. I made eight oak moldings 3/4” square x 9” long and gave one of the corners a 1/4 round cut on both sides so it was uniform. Then I angled the inside edges 1/4” in from the round edge and put a 1/8” cut in on the two angled edges. This gave the proper angle for the octagon shape . I cut eight pieces of mirror 3” x 9” and glued them into the 1/8” cuts. I glued the oak pieces to the top and bottom with TB-III.

The base and top are made out of 3/4” thick purple heart. They are 10” in diameter. The lamp kit I got at Lowe’s. I cut a 1” oak dowel to 9” and drilled a 1/2” hole throught the center and fed two 10” lengths of lamp screw extension (coupled in the center) and fastend it to the top. I drilled a 1/2” hole in the bottom and also a cut out for the wire underneath. There is also a 1/4” cove cut on the top and bottom pieces.

I just put three coats of urethane on the wood and then put bumpers on the bottom so there are no scratches.

Jim,

That is a nice design for the lamp. The combination of oak and purple heart works well and you did a good finishing job.

I am sure that it is the focal point of the room and it draws your attention to the photos as well (she is a doll).

Thanks for the post.

Lucky table you have – it’s got a beautiful child’s picture and an outstanding lamp resting on it. Your design is very unique and the execution is excellent.

A very special looking lamp. Selection of wood is good.
