This is my first version of the “bulge”board. I’ve seen some on LJ by several makers. Thanks to you for starting the process!!!

This is the first version : the next one will be endgrain. Now i had a lot of tear-out while drilling the holes. Endgrain seems to be a bit more forgiving.

This board will not leave the shop and will get a place on the “wall of shame”. Just a piece of the shop with projects gone bad. A very good way to make sure to stay humble and keep on trying having fun in the shop.

Really nice bulge effect. Mine hasn’t come out nearly that well. What are your dimensions on the squares and dowels? You also have your pegs closer to the sides so I might have to experiment with that.

Well based on the pictures I cant see there is any reason to be ashamed of this piece…the bulge is one of the most dominant effects I have seen posted. Well done!

I was thinking the same thing, Wall of shame? It looks great from the pics. I do understand we are our own worst critics! Blondie always tells me quit pointing out your mistakes, most people will never see them.
Great job!

The size of the dots certainly seems to have some bearing on the depth of bulge. I’d say you got it just about right here. Thanks for showing.

Great looking board! The dots give it something extra. Wall of shame?—hardly!

@derosa : the squares are about 26×26mm and the holes are 8mm

The plans are ready for the new build. I’ve ordered some new drill-bits at Axminster. It’s going to be end-grain,this seems the right way to go.

I’ll plane the stock this week and start the glue-up asap. I’ll try and make another design in the same week. Tomorrow I’ll start making some plugs…......I guess i need about 360 plugs….....

This looks familiar ;)
I think yours has a stronger illusion than mine.
Not sure if it is because the dots are bigger or closer to the edge or both.
Great work.
