Back Bench

This “back bench” compliments my joiner’s workbench perfectly, in that it is mounted at precisely the same height. It features four drawers about 17”x13”x4.5” with face frame construction. Drawer fronts are cut from one board of red oak so the figure flows across all four fronts. Drawer boxes were made of poplar, with hand-cut dovetails just cause I can always use the practice, with the drawer front applied after fitting. The top is 3/4” thick MDF and the overall size is 14” deep by 6’ 6” long. Eventually I plan to mount two small tool cabinets above the back bench with a bookshelf in between.

Making things the same height are great. Everything in my shop is the same height except for my router table.

Hi Steve,

This is a nice bench. You simply cannot have too much bench or drawer space in your shop.

Great looking bench. Looks too good to use in the shop.

Well done. It does look too nice for a work surface.

Yeah, I showed it to my dad, and he said much the same thing—“It looks like it belongs in the dining room, not the shop” but the top really is just MDF. After a few open cans of paint leave their rings, and a few chisels leave their gouges, I promise it’ll look just as well used as any other workbench! Thanks for all the kudos, though!—S.
