This Christmas I was wrapping my wife’s gift in a plain store provided box. When I got the idea of making a box to put the gift inside. Sort of two gifts in one. I started the project at 16:00 on Christmas eve and finished at 02:30 Christmas day. I figured out way back if you are going to make one box you might as well make enough parts for four. The images are from the 3 boxes made from the extra parts. She already took hers to work before I could get any images.

Box 1: Santos Rosewood body, Madrona Burl center and Alder accent.
Box 2: Mozambique body, Olive ash burl center and Bloodwood accent.
Box 3: Bubinga body and Ash Burl center.

All boxes are 6.5×9.5 and 3 to 4 inches tall. 1/2” BB plywood substrate and Titebond II as adhesive for the exotic veneers. Sanded to 220 grit. One pass of Watco Danish oil ‘Natural’ and a dual coat of Deft Satin lacquer.

Excellent rush job! Great veneers. I have ordered veneer a few times, but never received anything as nice as these pieces. What is your source of veneer?

NICE !!!!!! That’s what I like to see. 3 at once, and each a masterpiece unto itself. I am wondering though, what finish and technique did you use to make the burl pop like that? Oil? Shellac? What?

Beautiful! I want to make some boxes too. What joinery did you use on the corners? Looks like just plain mitres? Or are they locking mitres? Did you build the whole box and then cut it open? Is the lid hinged? I’d love to hear your comments to these questions. Maybe it will inspire me to get started.

Nice clean design that allows the veneer, particularly the tops, to be the star.
I like that.

Fantastic looking boxes in such a short amount of time. Well done. Let’s see at 16:00 Christmas Eve I was in church trying to get my 4-year old to sit still, might have had more success making a box :-) [although he did a bang up job for 4 year old all giddy about Christmas].

These are awesome looking boxes. I really love the burl wood on the top, just gorgeous. Keep up the good work. As a box-a-holic myself, I’m jealous.. beautiful woods.
