New Finish Experiment

I had an interesting piece of wormy pecan and wanted to try a Yorkshire Stewart type box. Didn’t have enough length to do M&Ts so elected to dowel it with shop made Jatoba dowels (3/8”). Dimensions: 16”x10”x6”. Tried a new finish that was really easy: MinWax Wood-Sheen (Windsor Oak). Just wipe it on, rub it off, repeat, repeat, and done. This one will probably go to “Loving Hands Memory Boxes”. Keepsake boxes for families who have lost a child.

That is a really nice box. The pecan really looks like it has alot of character. The finish looks very good. Hope you have not given up on the spray can lacquer. I have not used any Pecan before cause it is not in any of the lumberyards around here. Need to locate some.
I made a new display this weekend and doweled it together…had to drill 384 holes and install 192 dowels. Bought the precut 2” fluted dowels. Hope I don’t see another dowel for a while.

How did you make your homemade dowels?

Nice shine to the finish. You have me confused about the sides. It looks like you sloped the sides out at the bottom-somehow- , but the doweling seems to go the other way. A very nice job even if i am confused!

Looks good! The design is something a little different, I like it.

Greg, I haven’t given up on the lacquer, just haven’t been to town to get your brand yet. I have been practicing on some scrap with the Rustoleum and its turning out fine (of course it is, it’s scrap!). I make all my dowels on the router table using roundover bits. Anything from 1” to 3/8” is easy. Smaller than that I think would be a problem as stock is so thin it will want to twist and get away from you. This is really easy to do. I wanted dowels of different woods which weren’t available so I learned to make my own. Cheap too which always appeals to me. You start with square stock exactly the size of desired dowel. Robert, The sides are vertical. The camera created an optical illusion as the dowels are in a straight vertical line into the center of the side panels.

Nice box, I like this design. Is the top held in place with a wooden dowel or a steel pin? The finish looks good too Doc.

I’ve never heard of the chairity you mentioned, sounds like a good cause. Can you tell us more about them?

Andy, that finish looks like a treat. Nice box for the cause too. You’re one box-makin-fool. :)

Side note: I used your tag line in Sunday School this morning. It fit perfectly with the lesson.

Great cause and Great box, and better yet an end to your finish jinks. You have great style in your combination of wood. Always look to see whats next. Show us some more.

Darrel. The top is hinged with 1/8” brass brazing rod. I don’t like the look of the exposed brass so I countersink mine and then grue a 1/4” length of 1/8” dowel to hide them. Hope that makes sense. The “Loving Hands Memory Boxes” is a cause Arlin Eastman introduced me to. Send him a pm for details. He sent me a bunch of specs and instructions which I ignore! They seem very appreciative of anything you can make for them. These are basically keepsake boxes for parents to keep momentos of their lost children. I haven’t heard anything from Arlin lately and I’m getting worried about his health status. I’ll send a pm to see what’s up.

I like the finish and the shape. Well done … and good use of the skill for a worthy cause.

I love the shape, design and specially the dowels that are not vertical. That was unique, Doc – truly an out-of-the-box thinking! Nice finish too
