An early turning, first lidded bowl. about 10” across. Wood is catalpa, finish is wipe on oil poly. At the time I made this I didn’t have many turning chisels so I couldn’t do much detail work, I would have mad the knob handle thingy a little smaller, but I still think it looks cool. This piece has a chatoyance that is just amazing and the camera can’t capture.

You did a good job with limited tools. It does look cool. And interesting to hear your assessment of catalpa. We have an old yard tree coming down this summer because it has lived its life and is hanging over the house. I will have an abundant supply to work with. Thanks for posting!

Catalpa is a beautiful wood in my opinion, kinda soft and easy to work with, Only bad thing about it is it smells like wet dog when you cut it. It kinda has a greenish golden hue to it and takes a finish well, It’s not a real strong wood but nice to work with, underrated imho.

Very nice turning and the wood looks beautiful with all of that swirling grain : )

Thanks Dusty, Kinda funny that I posted this over a year ago and some one found it. It seems like it was so long ago that I turned this, I still have it.

It came up on the “project-go-round” this morning and I had to comment on it . Very nice even though you didn’t have all the tools you wanted at the time ….I never would have guessed that anything was lacking : )
