Well, I finally was able to get it ALMOST done… enough for a good idea, anyway.

Actually, I am making TWO of these boxes… I couldn’t get BOTH of them done to this point… So, I just got One done.

They will be used for 3×5 cards… and other misc. stuff until the room is needed for 3×5’s.

11” x 8-1/2” x 4-1/2

Was made from one 2×4 x 8’ Kiln dried from Home Depot.

Sides & ends are about 1/4” thick while the Top & Bottom are 3/8”

I still have a little more Finish sanding to do.

I will start with Mineral Oil or BLO… maybe some Shellac & Topped with lacquer.
Maybe I’ll Finish box #1 differently from Box #2.

I gotta say this 2×4 wood isn’t anywhere like Poplar, Oak, etc.
That grain makes it a whole new challenge.

I wish I had been able to seriously start it sooner!

1-23-12 Added another Project… Box #2…

That’s a nice one Joe. What kind of finish do you plan on using on it?

Glad to see you made it in Joe. I have to agree with the grain being a challenge. You did a great job…..

Nice job. Did you have any trouble with the board warping when you ripped it down? Working with this lumber definitely would be a challenge.

Good looking box there Joe. A simple piece of wood turned into something very useful.

Nice workmanship. I am always cursing 2×4’s, but you cut that one down to size and left me speechless….(-:

I have a bunch 2×4’s in my multipurpose bench. I used some very old ones in my cutoffs cart which is my current project. They were reclaimed from some shelving I took down. I am guessing they are over 30 years old, since they were here when we got here in 1985.
