Just finished up a gavel I made of Red Heart scraps I had in the shop. It is about 9” from mallet to end of handle. The mallet is 3 1/2” with a diameter of 2” at the faces. I love making something useful out of scraps. It was really a great little project just to make sawdust and pretty sawdust at that. I finished it with 3 coats of hand rubbed BUSH OIL.

That is fantastic! I know several judges that I would love to make these for. I can turn them on the lathe with no problem, but how did you affix the handle to the mallet piece? Jam fit? wedge at the top like a hatchet? Or some other clever way. I would hate for the top piece to come flying off during a trial…although come to think of it, that would be pretty awesome. haha..thanks.

I threaded the handle and mallet and glued it together. It was a 9/16” thread. I got the set of wood thread and dies at an auction about a month ago and just had to try it out.
