Fish Tank No-picture-s No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

After building the dinning table, I had some wood left over. I’ve always wanted a big fish tank, so I bought some glass, made some sawdust and built one. The glass is a 2.5’ 3’ octagon and 3’ high. It holds ~180 gallons, and a lot of fish. One of these days I’ll get around to building a top for it.

That is one nice fish tank…. My son has two and would flip out if he saw this one. He’d be asking dad to make one for him. He works with metal and I work with wood. Is it a fresh water tank or salt water? Very nice job. I love it.

That is a good looking tank, I really like the design. Where did you buy the glass? Is it special order stuff, any special characteristics?

That is a nice aquarium. Just be aware of the floor loading of that big of a tank. You have nearly 1500 pounds of water there.

Jr: It’s fresh water. I’ve thought of converting it to salt but didn’t want to shell out the expense. Besides, I have an algae eater that I’ve had since before I built it. He’s about 11 years old and ~12” long now. I’d have to build another tank to put him in.

Bill: Nothing special about the glass. Just 1/8” window glass, which was a mistake. I should have used 1/4”. I was hoping the mahogany would be stiff enough to hold the seems but it’s not. One of these days I’ll get around to taking another picture, but now there is a 1/8” stainless cable around the center with a turnbuckle in the back for support. I’ve also thought that putting 1” X 1” X 3/16” angle iron under the wood would have been a good idea.

Rik: The tank is over the furnace closet in the basement. That made it easy to reinforce the floor before filling the tank.

we needed a tank for our 2 pond fish for the winter – never thought of building one!
we just put them in a rubbermaid container for this year. Sillly fish -they don’t even swim around. I could have just put them in a big cup! haha

Great job and lots of tips here for anyone thinking of building one.
